Manorama was a renowned Tamil actress, playback singer and comedian who had a prolific career spanning over five decades. She had acted in more than 1000 films and 5000 stage performances and several television series until 2015. She was also known as Aachi, meaning mother, because of her motherly roles in many films. She was honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 2002 and the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film Pudhiya Padhai (1989). She was also a recipient of the Kalaimamani award and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award â South (1995).

One of her memorable roles was that of Jil Jil Ramamani, a witty and mischievous woman who often outsmarts her husband and other characters in the film Konjum Salangai (1962). Her work was noticed even among stalwarts like Sivaji Ganesan and Natiya Peroli Padmini, who played the lead roles in the film. Manorama shared in an interview that initially she was nervous acting in front of veterans like T. S. Balaiah, who played her father-in-law, but, the director A. P. Nagarajan made her understand that the scenes in which Jil Jil Ramamani appears, she would be the center of attention. She acted alongside the well-known comedian Nagesh in 50 films and in 20 films with Cho Ramaswamy. They made a notable pair and acted in many well-received comedies. In 1974 she shared the screen space with the legendary comedian Mehmood in the Hindi movie Kunwara Baap. Cho and Manorama were paired together in 20 films which included Malligai Poo, Annaiyum Pidhavum, Dharisanam, Anbai Thedi, Nanaivin Nindraval, Nirai Kudam, Ayiram Poi, Mohammed Bin Tughlaq, Bommalattam, Delhi Mappilai, Vilayattu Pillai, Kanavan, Rojavin Raja and Suryagandhi.Manorama was not only a successful actress, but also a talented singer. She had sung more than 100 songs in various languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi. She had also composed music for some of her stage plays. She had learned classical music from T. R. Mahalingam and T. R. Papa. Some of her popular songs are "Vaa Vaathiyaare Uttaande", "Naalu Perukku Nandri" and "Thanni Thotti Thedi". She had also sung duets with famous singers like T. M. Soundararajan, Sirkazhi Govindarajan and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam.
Manorama was also a philanthropist who had donated generously to various causes. She had built a temple for her mother in Mannargudi, her birthplace. She had also adopted two children from an orphanage and supported their education. She had also helped many aspiring actors and comedians to find opportunities in the film industry. She was respected and admired by her peers and fans alike for her generosity and humility.
Manorama passed away on 10 October 2015 due to a heart attack in Chennai. She was 78 years old and had been suffering from various health issues for a long time. She was survived by her son Bhoopathy, who is also an actor. Her death was mourned by the entire film fraternity and the public. She was given a state funeral by the Tamil Nadu government and her body was cremated with full honors.
